My Maui Humpback Whale and Calf design was created in 2015 and has been acquired by clients nationally and internationally since its debut. My elegant hand sculpted wall art is made on the island of Maui, Hawaii, in my studio “Ceramic Designs by Albert”. The driftwood is actually collected on Paukukalo shoreline, one of Maui’s exceptional pristine surf and dive beaches. This particular 3-panel piece is titled "Maui Humpback Whale and Calf” and the design is a relief design giving it a distinctive 3D appearance.
The glaze finish is the highest quality cone 5 glazes we can obtain in the USA, so the weather will not affect the shine/luster, or the brilliant hues, and it’s nontoxic. This piece has a beautiful array of five plus mixed glaze colors allowing for additional colors to come forth during the firing that allows each piece to be distinctive in its own remarkable way. The actual clay body consists of porcelain and stoneware clay giving it durability yet allowing the glazes shine to excel in its spectacular hues. Regarding the driftwood, if you chose to not have the drift wood we create the same exact relief designs without the holes or the use of the driftwood. This piece can be used indoors or outdoors, in cold or hot climates. To support the wall art we attach a heavy gauge wire hook to the back so you can easily hang it on the wall as wall art, however, if you’re planning to tile the Whale piece as a kitchen backsplash or use the tile as bathroom and pool tile no hook is attached upon request.
Approximate Measurements: 19” from end to end and 18″ from top of driftwood to bottom of the ceramic plaque, entire weight is approximately 7.3 lbs. Without the driftwood, measurement is 17” x 15 ¼” weight 6.1 approximately, give or take fractions of an inch. The panels can be space apart about a ½ inch to 1 ½ inch, your preference. We use twisted Sisal Rope, 48 lb. to hold the ceramic piece and driftwood to each other.
If we're sold out of the “Maui Humpback Whale and Calf” wall art piece, the turnaround time to create another one takes from start to finish approximately 1 month.
When hanging the plaques: drywall hooks is what I recommend to hang the pieces if you’re placing this piece on drywall “brand name I use is Monkey Hook 10 to 15 lb.”, unless the wall is made of wood then use screws or nails, cement wall use cement screws. To hang the driftwood use a 2.5 skinny nail without a head so it’s not that visible.
My Wall Art designs inspire many clients to create a very lovely tropical Hawaiian marine life theme in their home, regardless if they live in Hawaii, Texas, New York, Canada or anywhere else on our diverse planet. Bring some Aloha into your life from Maui!
