This turtle plaques with the driftwood attached is one of my earlier designs that’s been as popular today as it was back in 2008 when I initially design it. My elegant hand sculpted wall art is made on the island of Maui, Hawaii, in my studio “Ceramic Designs by Albert”. The driftwood is collected on Paukukalo shoreline, one of Maui’s exceptional pristine surf and dive beaches. This particular single panel piece is entitled "Maui Honu”, honu is the Hawaii word for turtle. The design is a relief design giving it a distinctive 3D appearance.
The glaze finish is the highest quality cone 5 glazes we can obtain in the USA, so the weather will not affect the shine/luster, or the brilliant hues over the years, and it’s nontoxic. This piece has a beautiful array of five to six plus mixed glaze colors and the temperature to melt the glazes needs to reach 2135 plus degrees during the firing. These high temperatures not only melt the glaze to its true glass form, but also causes them to move about allowing for additional colors to come forth during the firing, this allow each piece to be distinctive in its own remarkable appearance. The actual clay body consists of porcelain and stoneware clay giving it durability yet allowing the glazes shine to excel in its spectacular hues.
We create the same exact turtle relief designs without the driftwood so you can use the piece as a kitchen back-splash, pool tiles, or bathroom tiles, or wall hanging. This piece can also be used indoors or outdoors, in cold or hot climates. To support the wall art we attach a heavy gauge wire hook to the back so you can easily hang it on the wall as wall art, however if you’re planning to tile the turtle piece as a kitchen backsplash or use the tile as bathroom and pool tile no hook is attached upon request.
Measurements are approximately 12.5″ x 17.5″ from top of driftwood to bottom of plaque, weight 9.5 lbs. Without the drift wood measurement is 12.5” x 15”, weight 8 lbs. approximately. We use twisted Sisal Rope, 48 lb. to hold the ceramic piece and driftwood to each other. The clay body is porcelain and stoneware, so the piece is incredibly durable. The glaze finish is the highest quality glaze we can obtain in the USA, so the weather will not affect the shine/luster, or the brilliant hues. The glazes are also non-toxic, which allows you to serve food on all are serving platters.
When hanging the plaques: drywall hooks is what I recommend to hang the pieces if you’re placing this piece on drywall “brand name I use is Monkey Hook 10 to 15 lb.”, unless wall is made of wood then use screws or nails, cement wall use cement screws. To hang the driftwood use a 2.5 skinny nail without a head so it’s not that visible. If we're sold out of the “Turtle” wall art piece, the turnaround time to create another one takes from start to finish approximately 1 month.
My Wall Art designs inspire many clients to create a very lovely tropical Hawaiian theme or contemporary theme in their home, regardless if they live in Hawaii, Texas, New York, Canada or anywhere else on our diverse planet. Bring some Aloha into your life from Maui!
